Buarcos e São Julião is a Portuguese parish in the municipality of Figueira da Foz, with an area of 15.53 km² and 18,454 inhabitants (2011). Its population density is 1,188.3 inhabitants per km², located in the province of Beira Litoral, in the Central Region (Beiras Region) and the Baixo Mondego sub-region, at the mouth of the Mondego River where it meets the Atlantic Ocean.
Currently, the parish of Buarcos e São Julião is completely absorbed by the urban fabric of Figueira da Foz, but it still retains its particular characteristics, namely in terms of the design of its buildings, where typical fishing architecture predominates.
The population is still strongly influenced by fishing, although a growing number also make a living from tourism, particularly in the accommodation industry during the summer season.
The parish comprises the towns of Buarcos, Figueira da Foz, Vais, and Povoação da Serra da Boa Viagem.
It borders the parishes of São Pedro, Quiaios, Tavarede, and Vila Verde, all of which belong to the municipality of Figueira da Foz.
Buarcos and São Julião have a Csb Mediterranean climate according to the Köppen-Geiger climate classification. In winter, temperatures range between 7 °C and 14 °C, rarely falling below 0 °C, while in summer temperatures range between 15 °C and 25 °C and can exceed 35 °C during heat waves.
The average annual temperature is around 15 °C, while the average annual rainfall is around 600 mm. The sea temperature varies between 14-15 °C in January and February and between 18-19 °C in August and September. In winter, the weather tends to be unstable, while in summer, dry and sunny weather can be interrupted by cloudy or even rainy days.
In summer, and especially in the afternoon, late afternoon, and early evening, the wind tends to blow moderately (sometimes strongly) from the northwest.
