Infraestruturas de Portugal has suspended nighttime traffic on the Edgar Cardoso bridge due to renovation and reinforcement works that began in 2022. During the day, traffic is restricted.

The reopening of nighttime traffic on the Edgar Cardoso bridge in Figueira da Foz is scheduled for the first week of May, the mayor announced last Tuesday.

According to Pedro Santana Lopes, who in February had advocated the reopening of night traffic on the bridge by March 21, traffic restrictions will remain in place until early May, “unless bad weather forces a further extension.”

Infraestruturas de Portugal, the owner of the bridge, suspended night traffic on the Edgar Cardoso bridge due to renovation and reinforcement works that began in 2022, with the exception of emergency vehicles and Friday nights to Saturday and Sunday.
During the day, traffic is restricted.

The most vital part of the project is the replacement of tie rods, which includes the reinforcement of the deck beams and the deck fastening system, the rehabilitation of the support devices, the stripping and general painting of the metal deck, as well as complementary work on paving, lighting, drainage, expansion joints, and the repair and protection of concrete surfaces.

The Figueira da Foz Bridge, as it is also known, designed by Professor Edgar Cardoso, was the first road bridge with a cable-stayed deck built in Portugal, having been opened to traffic in 1982.

The works began at the end of 2022, with a completion deadline of 21 months and an investment of €16.8 million, and are expected to be completed before the summer.
