The Municipality of Figueira da Foz has announced that it intends to build a viaduct in the city to remove a level crossing on the West Line railway, where there have already been several accidents.
The mayor, Pedro Santana Lopes, revealed at the town hall session, during the period before the agenda, that the preliminary design is underway and is expected to be completed by April 30.
The mayor said that the future project includes the construction of a viaduct, in the Salmanha area, and a traffic circle, for a total length of 370 meters, with a total estimated cost of between one and a half and two million euros.
“Infraestruturas de Portugal has an obligation to take on this work, at least in part, as it has taken on other identical projects in different parts of the country,” said Santana Lopes.
Also during the period before the agenda, the mayor revealed that the project for the Quiaios bypass is nearing completion and should be approved at the next town hall session, along with the launch of the public tender.
The future bypass will be around four kilometers long and will mostly use the route corresponding to an existing firebreak, within an area that was owned by the Institute for Nature and Forest Conservation (ICNF) and which was exchanged with the municipality. It also covers 32 plots of private land, which are being negotiated with the municipality.
The mayor of Figueira da Foz estimated that the future bypass will represent an investment of around 4.5 million euros, more than double the initial forecast due to “updated estimates”. The road will have one traffic lane on each side and should include a cycle path, linking the town of Quiaios to the beach of the same name.
According to Santana Lopes, this is a fundamental road to ensure orderly traffic in Quiaios and to relieve the town of its current congestion.
