On March 14, 2025, Councilman Manuel Domingues received the 2024 “Most Accessible Beach” award at a ceremony held at the Lisbon Tourism Exchange. – Good Practice Award, given to Buarcos Beach for the implementation, by the Municipality of Figueira da Foz, of a heated saltwater pool, contributing to the enjoyment of the bathing area by all who use it.
In the 2024 edition, 23 applications were evaluated by the national jury in the categories of coastal or transitional beach and inland beach.
“This initiative aims to encourage the implementation of good practices that constitute clear added value in terms of innovation, scope, and quality of accessibility conditions and support available to people with reduced mobility, as well as consistent and effective communication to the public about what is on offer,” says the Figueira da Foz municipality.
The national jury for the award is composed of representatives from the National Institute for Rehabilitation, which chairs the Portuguese Environment Agency, Turismo de Portugal, the Directorate-General for Maritime Authority/Institute for Shipwreck Rescue, the Blue Flag Association for the Environment and Education, and the sponsoring entity, the company IACESS, which annually awards bathing support equipment to improve the accessibility of the winning bathing areas.
